Celine Galipeau reports for CBC-TV

Celine Galipeau reports for CBC-TV (Runs: 3:48)
QuickTime
Real Media

The first part of the report talks about how China is asking for help, including satellite photos of the area from the United States. The report shows a sequence of disturbing photos. The first one is before the earthquake of two villages along a river.

The next photo is three days after the earthquake. The bridge is gone and the river is rising.

The third photo is more recent. The waters have engulfed the villages.

Whole villages crumbled to the ground, I had tried to imagine. But washed away like that... I was stunned.

Questions are being asked why so many schools collapsed.
Then, in the middle of Galipeau's report, as a man is expressing anger towards a system that may have contributed to his child's death, we are allowed past the veil. A second man tells her to stop. He asks her interpreter if he is a Chinese, if he is, why does he bring the foreigner there? "Look how they reported what happened in Tibet. They're not here to tell the truth." That doesn't dissuade the father who lost his child; he needs to get the story out.

The school, shown in the next scene, was built in the 1960's - between the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. I hope that historical context will not be lost on the investigators from Beijing.
